MATCH REPORT
‘SHOE-LESS TUCKER WINS TWO GAMES AS BATTYEFORD UP TO SECOND IN THE LEAGUE’
The Aardvarks are now four points clear at the top of the Dewsbury Table Tennis league, after a 7-3 victory over the Colts second team. James Brown and Richard Cooper were in fine form winning all their three games and not dropping a set. The Colts did play well though and the team of Joshua Lane, Tim Martin and Thomas Lennox all won a game each. Freddie Brown also made is return for the Aardvarks, the 6 year old won a couple of sets, and is improving all the time with the intense coaching from dad James.
Battyeford are up to second in the league with a series of good wins, after playing some re-arranged matches. Battyeford’s match against the Terriers was a hard fought battle though, which they won 7-3. Man-of-the-match was the returning John Flynn who won all his three games and only dropped a single set on the night. He was well supported by team-mate Peter Tucker, who had to play his first game with no footwear. Luckily someone was able to lend him some trainers, and he went on to win two games. John’s son Nicky Flynn produced the performance of the match, with a straight set win over the Terriers’ Frank Lockwood, and a close five set defeat to Bernard Oldroyd. Chris Town was in good form for the Terriers winning two games. Tucker and John Flynn also won the doubles game in straight sets 11-6, 11-7 and 11-9.
The Colts third team had their first win of the season, a 6-4 win over Spen Methodists. Hannah Ferguson, James Meehan, and Jack Baldwin were in fine form, with Ferguson and Meehan winning two games each, and Baldwin one. The Colts also won the doubles game. Chuen Yoong was the man-of-the-match though for Spen, winning all his three games in impressive fashion. The match was finally won with Meehan beating Alan Gill in four sets.
Congratulations to Joshua Lane who was picked to train with the Northern Regional training squad at Bradford, run by former England International Sally Shutt. Sally is now one of the top coaches in the country. It now brings the number of Dewsbury juniors attending the academy to four. Jim Allan, Dewsbury coach, says that the hard work in the training sessions are now showing the results, and the future is looking bright. Any youngsters wishing to join the coaching sessions at the Heckmondwike Table Tennis Centre should contact Jim Allan on 01924 405491 for more information. Coaching sessions are on Saturday mornings and Monday evenings,

MATCH REPORT
‘Battyeford make flying start”
Battyeford have made a 100% start to the season with three wins out of three and top the Dewsbury Table Tennis league table in the early part of the season. Battyeford produced a polished performance in beating the Terriers 8-2. Barry Ryan and Paul Sangster were in great form winning all three of their games, with Les Fenton also winning two. The Terriers’ two wins came from Bernard Oldroyd who beat Fenton in four sets, and Oldroyd and Frank Lockwood winning the doubles match in four sets against Ryan and Sangster. The best game of the match was Ryan’s five set win over the unlucky Oldroyd. Oldroyd won the first set 11-7, but Ryan came back to take the next two 11-9, 12-10. Oldroyd levelled at two sets each winning 12-10 in the fourth, but it was Ryan who upped a gear in the final set to win it 11-5.
The Simpsons who won the league last season, were 6-4 winners against the Cuckoos. Richard Brearey was man of the match winning all his three games. He was well supported by Steve Crosby who won two games. Brearey and Crosby won the deciding doubles game in five sets, winning 11-9 in the final set. The performance of the match though was from the Cuckoos’ Steve Morris who beat Crosby in four sets 2-11, 11-8, 11-6 and 11-8.
The improving Colts A team were impressive 10-0 winners against Spen Methodists. Alex Harrod-Edwards, Lewis Williamson and Haroon Ali all won their three games. The best game of the match was Harrod-Edwards five set win over Spen’s Chuen Yoong. Harrod-Edwards lost the first set 6-11, but came back to take the next two 11-3, 11-8, Yoong made it two sets apiece winning the fourth set 11-9, but the vastly improving Harrod-Edwards took the deciding set 11-9.

Match Report
“Simpsons win moves them into second”
The Simpsons are up to second place in the Dewsbury Table Tennis league, with a 7-3 win over the Terriers. The star player on the night was the Simpsons’ Darren Page, who’s back playing after being injured for most of the season. Page won all three of his games without dropping a single set. He was well backed up on the night by his captain Jonathan Greaves who won two games, and Ian Teale one. Teale and Greaves also won the doubles match in five sets over Terry Armitage and Bernard Oldroyd. Oldroyd, Armitage, and Frank Lockwood all won a game each for the Terriers, with Oldroyd’s five set win over Greaves the game of the night. Oldroyd took a 2-0 lead, but Greaves clawed his way back to level at 2-2. Oldroyd stepped up a gear in the fifth set to win 12-10 in a nailbiter.
Battyeford drop down to third place in the league, but were still 6-4 winners against Colts A. Barry Ryan, and Les Fenton were in fine form, winning two games each for Battyeford, with Paul Sangster winning one. Sangster and Ryan also won the doubles in straight sets. This win was far from easy though for Battyeford, with the Colts’ man of the match Xioafei Dyson winning all his three games. The best win on the night was the Colts’ Chris Reece five set win over Sangster. Reece took a two 2-1 set lead, but Sangster levelled at 2-2 winning the fourth set 11-6, Reece though showed his vast improvement, as the youngster won the fifth and final set 11-7.
The closest game of the week was the T’old Men 5-5 draw with the Cuckoos. The T’old Men’s recent signing Keith Powell was man of the match, winning all three of his games. Powell was ably assisted by Steve Kosmowsky who won two games. The Cuckoos though were always a match for the T’old Men, with Mark Land winning two games, Linda Sanderson, and Adrian Worth one each. The game of the night was Powell’s five set win over Worth. Worth went into a 2-0 set lead, but Powell won the next three 11-9, 11-7 and 11-5 in a remarkable comeback. The doubles game proved to be the match decider, with Land, and Worth winning in five sets over the unlucky Powell and Kosmowsky to gain a point.
Colts ‘B’ had an unexpected win over Spen Methodists, winning 8-2 in an impressive victory. Youngsters Lewis Williamson and Alex Edwards were in fine form winning all their three games, and with Adarsh Bala winning two, they are certainly improving quickly. The only singles win for Spen was Alan Gill straight sets win over Bala. Spen also won the doubles in five sets. Man of the match though was young Edwards. He was playing so well that he only dropped one set all night in his three games.

“AARDVARKS SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT”

The Aardvarks remain top of the Dewsbury Table Tennis league, but suffered their first defeat of the season, when they lost 7-3 to the T’old Men. The T’old Men had their best team out on the night, with Steve Kosmowsky, Steve Taylor, and Keith Powell winning two games each. The Aardvarks’ three wins came from the ultra consistent James Brown, who was the best player on the night. The Aardvarks are still four points clear at the top, but other teams have games in hand, and this season could still be a very close call.
The Cuckoos kept up their recent good form, with a 7-3 win over the Colts first team, and are up to fourth in the league table. Alan Brook, Adrian Worth, and Phil Johnson all won two games each, with Worth and Johnson also winning the doubles game in four sets. The man of the match though was the Colts’ Xioafei Dyson who won all his three games, and that involved a five set win against the unlucky Worth. Xioafei won 12-10, 8-11, 11-7, 4-11, 12-10. The other close game in the match was Brook’s five set win over the improving Sam Perkin. Brook won coming from two sets down, winning 8-11, 3-11, 11-6, 15-13, and 12-10 in a great game.
The other two Colts’ teams played against each other, with the Colts second team beating the third team 9-1. Dan Hudson and Lewis Williamson were in fine form, winning all their three games, and Andrew Rouse played well to win two. Williamson and Hudson also won the doubles game in straight sets. The third team’s only win came with Tom Lennox beating Rouse in four sets. All the kids are improving quickly due to the effort of coaches Jim Allan and Chris Town.
Coaching for juniors is on Saturday mornings from 10:30-12:00, and on Monday nights from 7:00-8:30. Coaching takes place at Dewsbury Table Tennis Centre, Cemetery Road, Heckmondwike (next to the sports club).

Table Tennis - A Game for all ages
The match between Spen Methodists and T'Old Men caused the oldest turn-out for a match on record.
The average age was, I think around 72 ( to be verified) and that with a young man of 56 in the team.
First weeks play
“AARDVARKS MAKE A GOOD START”
The Dewsbury Table Tennis League is just six weeks into the season, but already the Aardvarks have pulled four points clear at the top, winning five out of five. The leader’s latest win came against Battyeford, with an impressive 8-2 victory. The star players on the night for the Aardvarks were James Brown and Ian Fothergill, who won all their three games, with Brown not dropping a set. Brown and Fothergill also won the doubles in a close five set game against Battyfords’ Paul Sangster and Peter Tucker, winning 11-6 in the final set. Battyeford’s points came from Tucker and Barry Ryan, who won a game each. The game of the match though was Fothergill’s five set win against Tucker. Fothergill had a 1-0, and 2-1 lead, but Tucker levelled in the fourth set 11-9 to make it 2-2. The fifth set was another close one, with Fothergill winning 11-9.
The new Colts third team had their first win in the league, an 8-2 victory over Spen Methodists. Adarsh Bala was man-of-the-match for the Colts team, winning all his three games. He was helped by his team-mates Dan Hudson, and Lewis Williamson who won two games each. Hudson and Bala also won the doubles match in five sets against Spen’s Geoff Hartley and Cheung Yoong. The game of the match was Bala’s impressive five set win over Yoong, with Bala winning 11-9 in the final set. Spen’s two wins were from Hartley and Yoong.
The T’old Men also had their first win of the season, a 9-1 win over the Colts first team. Steve Kosmowsky and Kevin Plowman were the stars of the night winning all their games, and the evergreen George Hoyle, who has played a countless number of seasons in the Dewsbury league, winning two games. The performance of the night though was achieved by the fast improving Colts player Chris Reece. Reece made a remarkable two sets down comeback to beat the unlucky Hoyle 11-7 in the fifth end.

DEWSBURY TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE
2008/2009
Weeks 1 & 2
“SIMPSONS AND CUCKOOS SHARE SPOILS”
The Simpson’s who have won the last three Dewsbury league titles started this season’s campaign with a 5-5 draw against the gutsy Cuckoos. DEWSBURY & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE 2007/08
WEEKS 21-25
“LEAGUE TITLE STILL UP FOR GRABS”
The Dewsbury Table Tennis League title is still up for grabs as we come to the climax of the season. The two teams again who are fighting it out are the Aardvarks and the Simpsons. The Aardvarks have a five point league at the top, but the Simpsons have three games in hand which would take them one point clear if they were to win them all. The two teams meet at the end of season, and the winners look sure to take the title.
The Simpsons kept their fine form going with a 9-1 victory over third place team the Hawks. Darren Page and Richard Brearey won all their three games impressively and Ian Teale won two. Brearey and Teale also won the doubles match in straight sets. The Hawks only win came from the ever consistent Jim Allan, who beat Teale also in straight sets.
The Aardvarks were also convincing winners after they beat the T’old Men 8-2. James Brown was man of the match winning all his three games in straight sets. Phil Thompson and Ian Fothergill supported Brown well as they won two games each. The Aardvarks also won the doubles match in straight sets. The two wins for the T’old Men came from the in form Steve Kosmowsky who beat both Thompson and Fothergill in five sets. In both the games Kosmowsky had a two set lead, but he still managed to hold on.
The closest game to come recently was the match between fourth place Battyeford and the third place Hawks. The match ended in a 5-5 draw, but both teams had some fine individual performers. John Flynn and Barry Ryan won two games each for Battyeford, with Paul Sangster winning one. Chris Town was in good form winning two games for the Hawks, whilst Jim Allan and David Firth won a game each. Town and Allan managed to get a draw in the game, after winning the doubles match against Sangster and Flynn 11-6 in the fifth set. The game itself had six of the ten matches going all the way to a fifth set. The best of these was Firth’s win over Ryan, the set scores were 5-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8 and 11-9.
Battyeford again kept up their impressive season, with a 7-3 win over the Dewsbury Colts. Player of the match was young Nicky Flynn who once played for the Colts. Flynn won all his three games, and the best of these was a straight sets win over the vastly improving Xiaofei Dyson. Flynn was well supported by Sangster and Ryan, who both won two games each. Xiaofei won two games for the Colts, and teamed up with Toby Lawton in the doubles to beat Flynn and Sangster in the match of the night. The match went to a fifth set with Lawton and Xiaofei winning 11-9.
The Terriers were also involved in a close game, when they beat Ravensport 6-4. Kevin Jones, Bernard Oldroyd, and Frank Lockwood all won two games each for the Terriers. The man of the match though was Phil Bell for Ravensport, who won all his three games on the night. Bell and Kevin Plowman also won the doubles match in straight sets beating Oldroyd and Jones.

DEWSBURY & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE 2006/07
SIMPSONS AND COLTS IN TROPHY SUCCESS
The Simpsons added to their league success by winning the Rosebowl Trophy Final 5-2 against the team who finished second in the league the Aardvarks. It was the Aardvarks who took the early initiative, with James Brown beating Richard Brearey in four sets, after Brearey had won the first set 12-10. The Simpsons levelled the match though straight away, with Richard Lightowler beating Stuart Brock in four sets, 11-5, 11-7, 7-11, 11-4. The Simpsons went two games to one up, when Darren Page beat John Stones 11-7, 11-8, 11-5. The Simpsons then took control of the match with the most crucial game of the final. It was the game between Brearey and Brock, Brearey won the first two sets 11-9, 11-7 and looked to be cruising, but Brock fought back to level at two sets all. Brearey found an extra gear though winning the fifth and final set 11-8. The match was wrapped up a little bit later, with Lightowler and Page winning a further game each to clinch the trophy.
The Dewsbury Colts made it their second Harding Trophy success in two years, as they beat the unlucky Aardvarks 10-8 in a repeat of last years final. The Harding Trophy is contested with each player given their own handicap mark. This years win for the Colts was much more difficult than last, as their three junior players all had lower handicaps. The match started well for the Colts, with Chris Reece beating James Brown 47-35. The Aardvarks levelled the match in the next game, with Stuart Brock beating Xioafei Dyson 47-40. The next game produced the same score, with the Colts’ Sam Perkin beating John Stones. The match then got really tight as the next two games were draws. Brock drew 45-45 with Reece, and Brown drew 35-35 with Perkin. The Aardvarks looked like they were going to pull away with match, as they went into an 8-6 lead, with wins from Stones and Brock, but the Colts showed their fighting spirit to win the last two games, with wins from Reece and Xioafei and claim a 10-8 victory.
